Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is a form of therapy that can help individuals who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro, who discovered that eye movements appeared to decrease negative emotion associated with distressing thoughts. Due to her understanding of the workings of the mind she integrated a counselling component with an eye movement technique which can enable people to break repetitive patterns of thoughts, memories and flashbacks.
